CBI Moringa/Natural Ingredients Project in Burkina Faso

The Moringa/Natural Ingredients Project in Burkina Faso is an initiative of the Center for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI) of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency. The project aims to build and introduce sustainable business models in the Moringa sector, by promoting the export of Moringa and other potentially exportable products to regional and European markets, and by addressing the challenges of ecological sustainability through viable business models. The goal is for economic and ecological value to go hand in hand and reinforce each other

Context

The Moringa sector in Burkina Faso is in a start-up phase. At the moment, the main actor for sustainable change is civil society, with various NGOs and social enterprises implementing several projects and pilots. Market demand for Moringa is niche and sector coordination is limited. There are a few initiatives, and some of the existing Burkinabe companies could take the plunge and become forerunners and pioneers. It is important to design project interventions that correspond to the phase the market is in. This project proposes coaching programs for SMEs, adapted to the local situation, to enable them to better develop the Moringa sector in Burkina Faso.

Methodology / Approach

With the aim of triggering a transformation towards more sustainable and inclusive sectors, New Foresight's Sustainable Market Transformation (SMT) theory and Market Systems Development (MSD) approach were chosen as potential approaches for the development and implementation of this project. AGRODEV provides coaching and logistics. To this end, a dynamic team has been put in place, along with equipment and rolling stock to facilitate the achievement of project results.

Achievements / Results

AGRODEV plays a key role in this project. Indeed, the success of this project requires a good knowledge of the sector concerned. With its solid experience in the moringa sector, the firm has helped to identify moringa players and facilitate international missions. The beneficiaries of this project will see their market developed through access to regional and international markets. The project will also contribute to soil restoration, climate resilience and income generation.
