Context

Food security remains a crucial issue for most African countries, and Burkina Faso is no exception. More and more, family farming based on the traditional model is gaining popularity, especially due to the awareness of the ravages of pesticides and other chemical products on nature and mankind. The Union des Producteurs de Mangue Biologique des Hauts Bassins (UPROMABIO/HBS) is part of the process of promoting organic products, but also of making healthy agro-ecological products accessible to the market. Indeed, organic products are very often intended for export or for an elitist clientele of "connoisseurs", with costs very often prohibitive for the middle classes. In addition, the emergence of local organic products is quite recent, and the organized frameworks for the promotion and sale of products from this healthy agriculture are rare.

Methodology / Approach

The methodology adopted by the project is as follows:

  • Innovate the fruit distribution strategy in urban areas (Bobo, Orodara and Banfora)
  • Strengthen the resilience of fruit farms to climate change and pests through crop combinations that promote fertility, biodiversity and the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach
  • Supporting the emergence of producer and consumer networks that promote peasant agro-ecology

Achievements / Results

The project has enabled urban households in the Hauts Bassins and Cascades regions to increase their consumption of agro-ecological fruits and vegetables. Small fruit producers are organized and have better access to institutional markets. In addition, they are adopting Integrated Production and Pest Management (IPPM) methods for the management of their farms. This new approach is improving the quality of the fruits and vegetables of UPROMABIO/HBS members. The impact of all these actions has facilitated the administrative and financial management of UPROMABIO/HBS, which is also perceived and recognized by the members. The network of producers, distributors and consumers in favor of peasant agro-ecology in the High Basin Regions is established and functioning.
