Context

Food and nutrition security remains a critical issue for the majority of countries in the Sahel and in Burkina Faso. Analysis of the Harmonized Framework, which covers 17 countries in the Sahel and West Africa, shows that the majority of countries are facing a food crisis and the worst conditions of food insecurity. 4.7 million people are affected by this crisis, nearly 500,000 people are in an emergency situation and more than 180,000 are in a famine phase. Analysis of climate trends shows that this problem is worsening. According to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), the Sahel is one of the most vulnerable regions in the world to the effects of climate change, due to poverty and the strong dependence of populations on natural resources, the fragility of ecosystems, the precariousness of infrastructures and limited scientific and technological capacities. Climate change will therefore continue to significantly affect this area, leading to a decrease in agricultural yields, changes in the flow of rivers and streams, increased desertification, etc.

Methodology / Approach

The methodology adopted by the project is as follows:

  • initiate actions to change attitudes among key actors such as urban households, product distributors, politicians, production, distribution and consumer cooperatives, and research.
  • The networking of key actors, the active involvement of youth and women, and the dialogue between stakeholders are the foundation of this strategy. These coordinated actions will make it possible to influence food security policies and promote sustainable agricultural systems.

Achievements / Results

The change for the improvement of the position of women and youth was made through the accompaniment for the harmonization of the texts/tools of a women's organization according to the principles of the AU OHADA. This support was preceded by a training session on the administrative and financial management of cooperatives. This harmonization is a major strength of this organization, bringing together nearly 90 women and youth, for the mobilization of investment funds and the membership of umbrella organizations. Other women's and youth organizations will benefit from this support in the future in order to consolidate the position of women and youth in the umbrella organizations involved in the agro-ecological transition. In addition to these activities in favor of the female gender, 2/3 of the different renovated outlets belong to women's organizations. These renovation actions have increased the quantity of products marketed by at least 15%. These different activities have contributed to laying the foundations for a sustainable change in the lives of these young people and women by strengthening the organizational, administrative and financial capacities of their organizations.
